By M.D. Tanupol Virunhagarun, Chief Operating Officer and Director, BDMS Wellness Clinic

While many foods are packed with essential vitamins and nutrients, we are often unable to attain and optimum balance. This can be caused by making unhealthy eating choices or simply due to how our bodies process the foods we eat.

Vitamins and minerals are like a lifeline that facilitate our body systems to function properly. They affect the nervous system, the immune system, and the workings of the brain. Keeping the right balance of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals is vital to maintaining a healthy body. For this reason, vitamin and mineral supplements are fundamental in our lives – especially for those who have inadequate nutrients, poor nutrient absorption, intestine complications, chronic fatigue and loss of appetite, and the elderly. These groups will require these vitamin supplements more than others.

Customized Supplement

Vitamin supplements are everywhere. But a “one size fits all” approach to vitamins does not produce the most effective outcome.

Without knowing the deficiencies are, we are at risk of taking the wrong supplements at the wrong dosages. This can be damaging to your organs, particularly your liver and kidney, as they need to work extra hard in order to expel excess vitamins. Moreover, certain types of vitamins are fat-soluble, so when taken in excessing amounts are more likely to be toxic to the body due to slower absorption. For these reasons it is more efficient and effective to always have the right amount of the right supplement, customized to the individual.

The process of customizing supplements to the needs of the individual requires a physician to fully understand the patient’s medical history, health conditions, lifestyle, needs and requirements. The physician will then analyze the patient’s blood results, study vitamin levels, and then customize a program of appropriate vitamins and minerals tailored to their body’s requirements. The team of doctors will then monitor the patient’s blood tests and his/her general condition every 3 to 6 months in order to access the proficiency of prescribed customized supplements over time.
